When you hear the phrase "boot camp," you're probably thinking about basic
training for the Army or Navy. Recently, however, many fitness clubs have been
adopting the idea of high-intensity workouts to get bodies into shape quickly
for long lasting results. There are also fitness companies that exclusively
train using this style of workout.
The philosophy behind boot camp
training does have its origins in the physical training you would receive in the
military. The programs are extremely challenging physically but the environment
is a lot more positive and encouraging. Many are actually designed for people
who have little to no experience working out. It's a great way to get into shape
and lose weight fast. You will be burning up to a thousand calories per workout!
You'll also be working multiple muscle groups at once without having to do
weight training on machines or with free weights.
Most programs for boot
camp start early in the morning, as early as 5am! Your gym may also have boot
camp-style classes that are offered for a 45 to 90 minute session at a more
convenient time. When you head to a gym or a program, you could be training
outside or in. Be prepared to work hard. Wear comfortable clothing and, if you
are a woman, proper support. You may have one or two trainers working with a
group. Cardiovascular work is a big part of training, so make sure you are
wearing shoes with proper arch support because you will be jogging or running.
Cross trainers would be the best style of sneaker to invest in. Make sure you
also come with a lot of water. You'll be running, jumping, doing push-ups,
obstacle courses, and more for up to 90 minutes.
When you start a training
regimen, make sure that you give your body ample time to rest. Most doctors and
trainers suggest working out three days a week with a day in between workouts
for your body to fully recover. When you train with boot camp programs, your
muscles will need time to heal. Healing is a part of the transformation process.
You'll be surprised how fast the transformation occurs, especially when
partnered with a new diet plan. Within three to six weeks, you will already be
feeling healthier, stronger, and more energetic. You will also loose a
significant amount of weight and gain a significant amount of muscle.
If
you're looking for a boot camp program, the most important thing to do first is
get permission from your doctor. Although programs are designed to suit
different levels of physical activity, you should currently be healthy and
physically able to perform the work that you're about to do. If you have any
health issues but are able to train, make sure your instructor is aware of your
current condition or of any past injuries so they can adapt their focus when
working with you.
