Hospital Unit Coordinator Schools prepare their students to serve as
communications liaisons between nurses, patients, physicians, administrators,
other members of a health care team. Prospective Hospital Unit Coordinator (HUC)
students are prepared with good working knowledge of medical terminology for
transcribing physicians' orders, scheduling tests and appointments, and working
with patient charts.
Hospital Unit Coordinator Schools teach courses in
healthcare facility operations; communications; computer data input and record
keeping; maintaining patient information; transcribing physicians' orders;
monitoring patient activities; and anatomy, physiology, CPR, and unit
management. Externships in medical facilities will be required of all
students.
HUC students learn to chart information; answer phones and
deliver messages to unit personnel; manage unit communications; keep work areas
neat and clean; and order supplies, prepare consent forms, and greet visitors.
On the job, HUCs may be responsible for delivering menus, flowers, mail
and messages to the patients; ordering meals and requesting lab reports; and for
processes of admitting, transferring, and discharging patients. HUCs are trained
to input patient information to and retrieve patient data from computer
terminals and to maintain strict confidentiality of all hospital, personnel, and
patient information.
Most HUC school graduates will find work in
hospitals, though some may work in nursing homes, medical clinics, and other
offices where medical and clerical services are needed.
